Summary Post for C4K comments 1 and 2

My comment for kids was on a girl names brittnee and we seemed to have more than our names in common.  Her first post that I commented on was the about me post and I found out that she is 13 years old and from Las Vegas.  She told us about her likes and dislikes and I commented what things I found that we had in common.  We had number one our names in common and she has moved a good bit in her life time as have I.  I told her that I enjoyed reading her about me and wished her luck in her class.  The last post that I commented on was her Learning Manifesto.  This was three things that she wanted to improve this year in her classes.  I commented that I agreed with her list and gave her some reasons why those things are important.  One thing that she wrote was that she wanted to get better at waking up early and I said that I would try to do the same thing because I am not a morning person.  I felt that I really asked questions and gave positive comments to help her.  I really enjoyed connecting with someone from a different state and background.

Blog Post # 5

1.  The benefits of podcasting in the classroom by Joe Dale

I agreed with the benefits that Mr. Dale explains about using podcasting in the classroom.  It's a way to reach you students at home or reach them if they cannot reach you.  If a student has a question about something that was study in the classroom a podcast might help to refresh the memory of that student.  I also liked that he commented on distant learning activities for absent students.  Podcast would be great for students who miss a lot of school due to an illness or family death or some unseen tragedy.  It would give them the same work and learning that the other students get in the classroom.  The last thing that really caught my eye was that parents could see what their child is doing and learning in the classroom.  This would be good because some parents are clueless as to what is going on in the classroom and by having a daily or weekly podcast it gives them a chance to see what the students are learning.  It can also help the extremely strict or worried parents so they know exactly what is going on.  This gave me some great ideas about using podcast in my future classroom.

2.  100 ways to use your iPod to learn and study better

These few tips and tools really helped me to understand what a podcast is and what it can do.  I really liked the soundwalk because with this you could create a virtual field trip that your students can do at home or during class.  The philosophy talk program that you can find on iTunes and save podcast I really found neat.  This program could help in the classroom by allowing you to find different podcast that you could show your class and save the podcast for later use.  I think that using different podcast by different people could really help in the classroom and there are so many places that you can go to get podcast.  The last thing that I looked into was the Education Podcast Network.  This was a really great site with lots of different podcast.  I liked that it was broken down by different subjects and grade levels.  This would help in preparing  me for using podcast the right way in and out of the classroom.  I could use some of the podcast in my own classroom.  I like that there are different tutorial on using different technology in the classroom for example the SmartBoard.  There is a podcast on how to use the smartboard and I can always go back to that podcast if I have questions.

3.  Judy Scharf Podcast Collection

I used this website when doing my podcast and it really helped me out.  This website gives you timelines and definition on what podcast are.  I like that it gives you suggestions on what you could do podcast on so that if your just drawing a blank you could come to this site get and idea and get tips to succeed on the same website.  I liked that she had a criteria sheet that she used when giving her students the podcast assignment and it can be used in doing a regular podcast or podcast that we had to do in this class.  I could use this website in my classroom and use the rubrics and information to adapt to my classroom.  I really enjoyed looking through this website and using some of the information in my own podcast.

Blog Post # 4

1.  Don't teach your kids this stuff. Please by Scott McLeod

I really liked reading this blog post because it uses and unconventional way to teach how important technology is.  At first I was confused about his intentions but once I kept reading I understood what he was trying to do.  We all know that when our parents or friends tell us not to do something at some point we do it.  We do it out of curiosity.  So by him telling his parents, students, administrators not to read this he knows that at some point they will read it and they will understand what he is trying to do.  I agree in his way of teaching and going about it the way he did.  Scott McLeod is an associate professor of Educational Administration at Iowa State University and the director of the UCEA center for the advanced study of technology leadership in education.  He also is the co-creator of the "Did you Know" videos.

2.      The iSchool Initiative by a high school senior

I thought this video was okay but I didn't' totally agree with it because I feel that it may affect students differently.  I liked the idea of using the iTouch in the classroom to replace heavy books but I don't think it should replace creativity.  By having everything on this iTouch  like maps I feel that it wouldn't spark creativity and allow students to physical place or color something on a map. Although I disagree with some things that this high school student stated there are somethings that I do like.
I like that it will give the students resources that may not be available in a hard copy.  I also think that by having this type of technology in the classroom it will motivate students to want to learn how to use technology.  I agree about having certain things in the classroom be on this iSchool initiative but I would modify mine to fit my classroom.  I like the idea of being able to record lectures or lessons because some students may get better grades by hearing what they learned again.

3. The Lost Generation

When I first watched this video I was confused because it seemed so real and so truthful. When I got to the end I realized that it was being read backwards.  I like this type of learning and it defiantly is an attention getter.  I wanted to keep listening and trying to figure out what was going on.  I feel like it is a wake-up call and will grab your students attention.  The techniques in this video are great they grab your attention and keep which is sometimes hard to do especially for me.

4. Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir

I really found this interesting and amazing.  People from all over the world are connecting in so many different ways.  The Internet is one of the fastest growing ways that people are connecting and this shows how much we all have in common.  I found that these people never met and never knew each other yet they all knew the words to the song.  The use of Internet in this virtual choir is mind blowing it uses so many different aspects of the Internet and ways you can use technology.

Additional Assignment # 1

A.  I believe that having students use Google squared would greatly help them put a lot of information into a simple and easy to understand table.  They can search multiple things and see it all presented  right in front of them and they do not have to go and pull up multiple website or pages.  They do not have to click back and forth trying to see all of the information.  I like that you can add different things to the table and narrow your searches down to exactly what you are looking for.

B. I think that using Wolfram Alpha searches is very helpful especially in the classroom.  Children can use this website very easily and perform searches that will only bring up the information that they are trying to learn.  I used planets as on of my searches and it came up with tables, pictures, individual information about each planet, and many other things.  Using this in the classroom would be  beneficial because you could put in anything you wanted and it would come up with a multitude of educational information.  You could use this with social studies, science, math, and pretty much all the subjects and this would allow students to use the internet and technology to gain information.  I would rather have my students use this website than looking the information up in a book or textbook.

C.  I didn't know that Google squared even existed until this assignment and now that I know about it I will be using it to find quick and easy information.  It really beats having to look things up in books or going all over the internet to find quick facts on things.

D.  I had no idea that wolfram Alpha was out there.  This could have helped while I was still in grade school because when your in school you have tons of research projects that you have to do and this website puts a lot of information in one place.  They give you the exact information that you type in so, if I would have typed in daisies it would bring up all kinds of information on just daisy and it's all contained in one place not all over the internet.

F.  I liked doing this assignment because it gave me insight to things that I didn't' know we could use in our classrooms.  It makes statics easy because both sites puts things into easy to understand tables or combines a lot of information on one website about particular things that you search for.

Blog Post # 3

1. Michael Wesch: A Vision of Students today

I really felt that this video captured most of what my college experience have been.  There has been many times that I have bought expensive books and never opened them and there has been times where I don't take a single note.   Also I have had classes in which I am only on facebook not paying attention because the teacher is lecturing straight from notes and he or she is reading word for word. You can look around a boring classroom and see that not many students are paying attention to the teacher when they are just lecturing but you get a class involved with using technology and things dramatically shift.
I feel like when a professor or teacher gets technology and hands on technology involved I personally learn better.  I don't think sitting in a desk listening to the teacher talk or lecture or give examples that are straight from the book helps me at all.  I get bored and I do other things whether it be doodling or getting on facebook, or even text messaging.  I felt that this video really explained how we as students feel sometimes when we are in class just sitting there and having over 100 students next to us.

2. It's not about the technology by Kelly Hines

I enjoyed reading this blog post by Kelly Hines.  I agree when she talks about technology and learning it in the 21st century.  Our children are going to learn things that we never knew were possible and I like that she say's technology is important in the classroom but it shouldn't be the focus or the first thing learned because children need other types of stimulation besides technology.  They need hands on learning and using their brains and they don't need to relay solely on technology to get things done.
I liked that she gave list of what teachers need in the newer age of things.  I think that we as teachers should know about all the different resources that are available to us and we should know how to use them.  I do highly agree with her when she say's learning will not look the same to all students or teachers and that no matter what the bottom line should be to learn.
I read the part about teachers needing to learn how to use technology or our time and money will go to waste.  I think that if your not willing to learn and open your mind to technology then your wasting valuable time and money.  We do not need to learn everything but I feel that we need to know some about using technology in our classrooms.  Kelly's blog was very insightful and I connected with a lot of what she as trying to say because I want to learn about ways to use technology in my classroom and better my students.  Knowing about technology can better satisfy the needs of the "future" students of the world.

3. Karl Fisch: It's Okay To Be A Technology Illiterate Teacher

I really enjoyed reading his blog post and learning how other people view technology.  He said that teachers do not have to know technology in and out but they do need to have some kind of understanding of it.  We teach our students by doing things with them so, if we are teaching by doing then learning technology should be done the same way.  I agree when he says things about what our students need to have in order to be successful in the 21st. century.  Technology is becoming more and more involved in our every day lives whether we want it  to or not.
I think that teaching or learning technology should be apart in every future teachers training.  I don't mean that a teacher should be amazing at using technology when he or she graduates but, they should know how to teach and use the different kinds of technology that are out there.  Students who will be graduating in 2020 will know more about technology then we could ever dream of knowing.  Also more and more schools are using technology in the classroom by allowing the teachers to use smartBoards or other programs like that.  From my personal experiences in the classroom I found that the students that I was observing knew more about using the smartboard than I did and at that point I knew I needed to do whatever it took to learn about the smartboard and all of the different technologies out there. I know now that I am not illiterate when it comes to technology but I can still benefit from knowing more about technology as it progress.

4. Gary Hayes Social Media Count

I really really liked looking at this count because it's amazing to think that people are using technology at such an outstanding rate.  It affects me as a future teacher because those numbers will probably triple by the time I am teaching and I know things will change and the face of technology will change.  Things that I use today may not be so new when I am teaching.  Technology will continue to grow and according to this chart it will grow at rates we never imagined.  All I can do is prepare myself the best way I can and I will continue to learn by doing.

C4T # 1

I had Mr. John Spencer as my first C4T blog post.  He is a teacher in Phoenix ,Arizona and he likes to relate most of his blog post to pencil.  The tittle of his blog is Tom Johnson's Adventures in Pencil Integration.

In this particular blog post Mr. Spencer talked about how some parents and children only focus on what the outside of things looks like, they don't look at the inner beauty. He goes on to say that with time and once the parents are involved in the children's learning things change.  They begin to see what the children is learning and how they are learning it.  The parents are no longer looking at the child's work from the outside but now they are looking at what the child has accomplished whether the problem be right or wrong, they now see the effort that was put in. In my comment that I left for Mr. Spencer saying that i agreed with him completely because some parents do not get involved in the child's learning they simply look with their eyes and not their minds.  I compared the parents involvement in the child's learning to looking at a pencil as just a pencil and not seeing what the pencil can represent.

The last blog post that I commented on was about show and tell and what it can do for a classroom.  He gave examples of things that meant something to him but may not have meant anything to another person.  He said show and tell gives the children a way to share things about themselves in a different way. He commented that not every child has to participate in this exercise but it does help the children learn about each other in a different way.  The last thing he talks about is having school be a show and tell type.  This means put a personal touch on the things we teach and show the students things on a more personal level.  I commented on his blog saying that I agree with him because show and tell can be such a rewarding thing in a classroom.  It help children understand why things may mean different things to different people.  It also gives a feeling of personal involvement both on the students side and teachers side.

Blog post #2

1.      I really enjoyed this video and it really made me thing about technology.  I never realized that technology was growing so fast and that our facebook, skype, and other social networking tools were growing as fast as they are.  I did find one thing in the presentation that struck me really hard, “for students starting a four year degree, half of what they learn will be outdated by their third year".  I find this amazing because it just really shows us how fast technology is growing and how much we use this in our everyday lives.
I also liked finding out how much we use our technological devices every day.  It amazed me to think that we send and receive text messages so much that it exceeds the human population.  People live with their phones or PDA's and we use them for so much more than talking. I think that technology will always play a major part in our everyday lives and I look forward to learning more about it.

2.     This video was very interesting and kid friendly. I think that by letting young children watch this they will understand that technology is in our everyday lives.  They will know how things are used and why they are used.  I like that it explained and gave examples about the technology that was being used.  The language is kid friendly and it really gets down on their level.
I didn’t like the part about school being so simple and all about lecturing.
I felt like it confused the children because it was all talk about the way we use               technology and then it said that it wasn’t used in schools.  I think that technology is a very important part of the school systems.  In today’s world children use technology better than most adults and this shows us something and shows us that the adults of tomorrow are going to be more technological than we ever imagined.

3.     This video was very entertaining and I really enjoyed watching him speak.   I agree with his thoughts on how much education and technology changes every day.  He said that people don’t know how the world will look in five years and I agree with that all we can do is prepare our students the best way we know how.  If technology didn’t change ever we would have a major problem. It’s good that technology changes as rapidly as it does, I feel that it keeps us on our game.  When he was talking about creativity I really connected with him.  Creativity is the best way to reach a child and without it we don’t have anything.  Children learn through creativity and they retain it better when they have something creative to help them.  I do see what he’s talking about when he says schools are limiting creativity; all they want to do is pass the children to the next grade.
I loved that he commented that we don’t grow into creativity but that we grow out of it.  I completely agree because how many adults do you see now days that draw a picture to explain something verses writing it out in words?   I will be watching more videos by ken because he doesn’t sugar coat anything and he is funny.  I like his truths because I am a strong believer in using creativity to the fullest.  I will use creativity in every part of my teaching whether it is math or writing or even social studies.

4.     I agree with this teacher completely.  She said at one point that we as teachers think that we need to know everything about technology before we can teach it but that’s wrong, I feel that this is a true statement.  Since technology changes so much everyday there is no way to know every little thing about technology.  I believe there should be more classes like her in every grade level not just high school.  There is technology that can be used in a kindergarten classroom.  If we start early then as technology progresses we can better prepare our students and they will know how to use technology properly.
I really liked the idea of digital citizenship and corresponding with people from around the world.  The digiteen program is amazing and it really gives children the tools to learn how to research and use technology at the same time.  It also gives them experiences they may not get in a regular everyday school system.
